Before You Choose A Contractor Consider The Following:
- Get referrals from friends and family.
- Get to know your contractor. How long have they been in the paving industry, how long have they owned their own business. Are they easily accessible by phone.
- Get references and check them. Not all contractors work is of the same quality
- Ask to see examples of a contractors work, not just newly installed jobs, but jobs that are a few years old.
- Check with your local government/ Town Office to see if a permit is required.
- Visit your local BBB website and check out contractor’s reputations. https://www.bbb.org/us/ny/
- NYS Law Requires a Contractor to provide a written contract. Make you’re your contract/estimate includes written, detailed specifications, and compare it with your other estimates. (exp. Is asphalt depth before or after compaction, Are Materials State Approved)
- Ask as many questions as you need to understand what you’re purchasing. A professional Contractor should be prepared and happy to provide you with answers.
- Obtain proof of Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance. If you hire an uninsured contractor and an accident occurs, your homeowners insurance is responsible for damages or injuries.
- Take the time to think over your options prior to making a final decision. Don’t let a contractor rush you into making a decision.
- Trust your instincts. If you don’t feel comfortable and confident with a contractor keep looking.
- Keep in mind that an economy price does not necessarily equal a quality job. A higher estimate could be attributed to the skill of the contractor and their employees and/or the use of better materials.
- Never pay a contractor in full before completion of the work. Most Paving Contractors won’t ask for money upfront, although some may require a small amount as a deposit.
- Never hire someone who knocks on your door. Experienced contractors rarely have large amounts of leftover material and will also provide you with written contracts.
- Last but not least, If it sounds too good to be true…..Buyer Beware!
